Regatta in the Media

2012

January 2012
The committee started working on the Cardboard Boar Regatta by handing out thousands of flyers at our yearly Cape Coral Art Festival. We raffled off the legacy boat from Bill Shallbetter which he raced for the last 10 years. The raffle made $190 for the Rotary Foundation and the lucky winner is  Duane Lashua of Lehigh Acres. We look forward seeing him to race it on April 21st.

Student engineers show team spirit, go down with ship
Proudly wearing their horned helmets, brown capes, tangerine life vests and warriors’ swords, the mighty Vikings went down with their 20-foot ship in the Cape Coral harbor.
The water-logged finish – for which the team captured the coveted Most Spectacular Sinking Award – marked the end of an 8-month voyage for the inventive team of students from FGCU’s recently accredited U.A. Whitaker School of Engineering.
The aspiring civil engineers built their entry in the 18th annual Cape Coral Cardboard Boat Regatta from recycled cardboard and six cases of Liquid Nails. The popular event, sponsored by the Cape Coral Rotary Club, attracts dozens of competitors, whose entries must be made of nothing but cardboard and adhesive. . ... More (Cover & page 12)

April 17, 2011 - Cardboard boats take to the seas off Cape
News Press
Skippers fought the wind and paddled for glory Saturday during Cape Coral's 17th cardboard boat races. More than a 1,000 people cheered them on and marveled at the creative cardboard contraptions that resisted sinking for the most part. Cape resident Gerri Decker toured the boats on display at Four Freedoms Park, which overlooks the Bimini Basin. This was her third trip to the races. 'It's fun. I like looking at what people go through to make a boat,' Decker said. All the boats were made from cardboard, glue and paint. ... More

Crafty builders will find out Saturday

Sometimes they float. Sometimes they don't. They're cardboard boats, after all. What else do you expect? That's why Jack Webb named his boat The 'USS Hope It Floats.' He's optimistic - but also realistic - about his chances at Saturday's Cardboard Boat Regatta.

Students try nautical ideas they hope will float
The FGCU College of Engineering has decided to prove it has ideas that can float by entering a couple of upcoming competitions. The first is the 18th annual Cape Coral Cardboard Boat Regatta, hosted by the Rotary Club of Cape Coral. The engineers have big plans and aspirations for the competition and projects are already under way. The cardboard boat regatta is an annual event in which participants must build a boat and race it. The rules are simple: The boat must be built entirely from cardboard (the only exception being the type of glue or tape used) and "let your imagination reign supreme," according to the official website. ... More
